NRL - Affiliate Player Program

As part of the EOAARA partnership, our goal is to create a clear pathway for our athletes aspiring to compete at the highest levels of the sport and create opportunities for NRL training and play. One opportunity is through the “NRL - Affiliate Player” program.

Overview

Affiliate Players to the NRL team may be able to participate in NRL team practices and any other development opportunities. As needed, Affiliates will be asked to participate in exhibition and league games to help fill the NRL roster. NRL coaches, U19 coaches and the athlete will communicate when opportunities to play arise and ensure that the athlete’s development and U19 team are the priority. There are no team fees required to be paid by selected Affiliate Players, but the athlete is responsible for the tryout fee and any travel or accommodation costs.

Intent and process

For U19AA EOAARA athletes who have the ambition to pursue this pathway, below are the steps required to be considered as an “NRL Affiliate Player”:

  1. Athletes should register their “intent to tryout” with the NRL team (see note below).
    • Under the section “I am interested in trying out for”, select “an affiliate player roster spot”.
  2. All athletes who submit their intent to tryout, will be considered to participate at the NRL tryouts. The NRL will only invite selected athletes to participate at tryouts. Several factors may determine which athletes are selected to participate at NRL tryouts, including observations at the U19AA tryouts.
  3. Following the NRL Tryouts and Team Formation process, selected athletes may be invited to participate in the NRL - Affiliate Player Program.
  4. During the season, the U19AA and NRL programs will work closely to coordinate their programs, based on factors such as scheduling, team needs, etc.

* Note:

  • All U19 age eligible athletes, including high performance “3rd year” players are strongly encouraged to play within their age, and participate as an NRL Affiliate Player.
  • U19 aged players may request an “exemption” and tryout for a “full time” NRL roster spot.
  • Exemption requests must be made in writing to the Chair, EOAARA, as early as possible, but prior to the U19AA Tryout process.
  • The EOAARA, in coordination with the NRL team and Ringette Canada, will determine if the exemption request is approved, on a case-by-case basis, with the primary goal being that the athlete’s development and well-being needs are met

Other NRL Programs may provide opportunities for athletes to “affliiate”, and athletes are able to register their intent to tryout as affiliate players with them in similar ways. Any EOAARA athlete selected to affiliate with an NRL team will be permitted to do so, recognizing that the athletes priority remains with their U19AA team/program. The EOAARA and Coaches will strive to provide the best development and opportunities possible for each athlete while balancing the needs and expectations of the EOAARA program.
